Irwin 6041705CD Strait-Line 150 Live Wire in Wall Sensor
Identifies metal studs and warns of live A/C wiring for safer electrical work and shelving. Finds studs behind drywall, paneling, or tile up to 1-1/2" thick. Auto marking for cleaner surfaces. Automatic on/off with surface contact for quick detection. LCD screen shows exact location of stud as tool is moved over the surface for pinpoint accuracy.
Back when the first stud finders came out, we thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. But technology's brought those old stud finders into the 21st century, and here we have Strait-Line's Wall Scanner 150, aptly named because it does so much more than find studs-?it could save your life. Accuscan technology locates not just wood and metal studs, but live A/C wires and pipes behind three surfaces: drywall, paneling and tile. And funny how when your old stud finder lit up, you never had that pencil in hand to mark the stud's edge. You won't need one anymore, thanks to the clever built-in marking element on the Wall Scanner. Just press the button when the liquid crystal display indicates a stud and the unit beeps, and you'll get a clear mark. Since it runs on batteries, we think it was great of Strait-Line to give it automatic power on contact, and an integrated belt clip keeps the tool handy. Strait-Line left no room for improvement on this one.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Irwin 6041705CD Strait-Line 150 Live Wire in Wall Sensor Reviews
I've tried a number of different stud finders in different price ranges and from different manufacturers. So if you don't mind playing "guess where the stud is" and punching multiple holes in your wall you'll love this baby. It will "identify" a stud location on one pass and give no indication over that same location on the next pass. This one worked no better than the others, which in a word is awful.
I finally gave this thing up and bought another brand. It's a real pain in the *** if you want to use it over grooved paneling or textured ceilings. This works fine if the surface is smooth. It also had a separate On/Off switch that looked like it wouldn't get turned on in my tool bag like the side button ones can. The Strait-Line unit felt solid and got good reviews so I picked one up. When my old stud finder finally stopped working, I looked around for a replacement.
I definitely wanted one that had a hot wire sensor on it. On the plus side, I really liked the little "dimpling" marker. The button loses contact and turns off the tool. But here's the problem: After you turn the unit on with the switch, there's a small spring loaded button on the back that must contact the wall for calibration and use.
I was able to find studs, but it took alot of work. Glad I don't have to use this thing professionally. Had to check over and over to get an idea of where the studs were.
Despite the high praise heaped on this stud finder by some reviewers this stud finder is not that great (some reviews must be written by the manufacturer). Look elsewhere for a single purpose device. I found it difficult to use and no better than others. The directions are poorly written and the device is unreliable.
