For you furniture makers out there who find yourselves spending more time than you'd like setting up the mortising attachment on your drill press (then taking it off, again), JET's affordable benchtop mortiser ought to be a welcome addition to your woodshop's tool collection. Designed to take up to 1/2-inch chisel bits, JET's benchtop mortiser runs off a 1/2-horsepower induction motor. At only 44 pounds, the tool is sturdy but also easily maneuvered, plus it reverses on its base to allow for mortising in long stock. The 4-3/4-inch head stroke is great. Bits are easy to change. Just flip open the steel door on either side (these doors are made of flimsy plastic on some of the competition's models) to gain easy access to the chuck. And, thanks to the 4-inch chuck key, there's little chance of banging or scraping your knuckles while switching bits (a small touch, perhaps, but a nice one). We also like the quick-setting depth stop on this tool--as well as the removable toggle switch that keeps less-experienced (or child-size) hands out of harm's way. The mortiser's feed handle adjusts, too, so you can choose the most comfortable position for each application--another nice touch. Set on a heavy-duty cast-iron base with four predrilled mounting holes, this dependable machine allows any woodworker, from the beginner to the expert, to create fantastic-looking mortise-and-tenon joints. --Justin Paul

Jet 708580 JBM-5 1/2 Horsepower Bench Mortiser Reviews

Personally, other than the hold down, I love this tool. It's a very well made product, from the mortiser itself, the very sharp chisels that come with it and the chuck key. I don't think I can say it much better than most of the other reviewers here, but that's never stopped me before. However, the hold down does leave a bit to be desired. If you're drilling holes and chiseling the waste wood or routing.well if you've got the dough (and in this economy, it's an understandable consideration)., give the Jet a looksee. It doesn't give me that sense of confidence at all times as far as whether or not it'll stay put.but it has so far.

Yeah, they are sending me new pieces, but what a bad QC job. I used my neighbors machine. he has this same machine, I was so impressed, I ordered it the next day. The fan and fan cover were beat up and broken and one of the screws was cross-threaded. Mine arrived very quickly, amazon is great the packing was perfect, but the machine looked like it was assembled by monkeys.

There is no wrench included to tighten it and it took a while to find one in my collection that was close enough tighten it. However, when I opened the box I found the top fan cover was dented in so as to impede the movement of the cooling fan. Once I got going, it performed as I would have expected although I will probably get a better set of bits than the ones included. When I received the mortiser, there were no obvious signs of damage. It was easy to pound back out and there is no paint or structural damage but it should never have left the factory that way. Just a pain in the neck. Also, the post that the hold down clamp secures to has a set screw to hold it tight and that was loose from the factory.

I should have read the small print with the mortiser. I did keep the machine and added a spacer for wider stock. This is not typical Jet equipment, I have a Jet table saw, lathe and band saw, they are impressive tools. Rich It does work better than my drill press but not much. the throat is just enough to mortise a 2X4, in hard wood the motor jams because of wood chips, the chuck is too small 5/8ths would have been a better choice and hard to access.
