JET JML 1014I 10 Inch X 14 Inch Indexing Mini Lathe Reviews
The Jet seems to be a cut above most other Chinese-manufactured power tools I've seen recently. It seems that most opinions were pointing to the Jet mini lathe over other makes by the usual well-known names. In fact, all the tool hand locks work well. . I use it on my workbench, but I intend sometime in the near future to purchase the Jet stand. I think the stand will help alot, so my recommendation to anyone contemplating its purchase would be to seriously consider buying the stand as well. The major components (base, head stock and tail stock) are cleanly cast iron, well-finished, with excellent alignment.
The operation is very quiet (you can speak to someone while the motor is running without yelling), and as many others have noted in other reviews, it is very solid on the bench, with no vibration. It's a little hard on the fingers, and the rubber handle cover doesn't stay put. The tool rest moves smoothly and locks positively. I did a fair amount of online research before purchasing this lathe. Most of my home woodworking tools are Delta, but I skipped the Delta lathe and purchased this Jet instead. At 72 pounds, it's quite a load to have to move around the shop from shelf to bench and back.
The only item I'd like to see improved a little is the friction lever that locks the motor in place.
It is solid lathe, well usable within it's limits. It's ain't designed for that. I bought this lathe as a "2nd" lathe, primarily to support the turning of lace bobbins and pens. But then I leave the lathe at high-speed, as all I turn with it are small spindles. The only down-side, is changing speeds. Don't expect to turn 8 inch (dia) 10 inch long, rough cut, hollow-forms.
And, of course, the free shipping is a MAJOR bonus with such a heavy item. It is HEAVY (which is good) and easy to use. I am new to wood turning, but I am really happy that I chose this machine to start on. To do what I wanted to do I have had to buy some accessories, but that is normal for a new hobby. Highly recommended. As long as you are doing small work like pen turning, or cork rod grips and reel inserts it is the perfect size and easy to place in the shop.
The new index head makes it much better. I have used this lathe and know it to be a good one.
Exceptional lathe for the price. Solid as a rock and smooth running with virtually no vibration, and I have it sitting on a table-top. Easy to adjust the speeds with the belt (and I'm new at turning). Turns exotic wood with ease.
