Historically, the alternative to the built-in sprinkler system has involved setting up a hose and sprinkler and then manually relocating the water source to several strategic locations every thirty minutes for several hours. With a rustproof cast iron construction, the sprinkler waters up to 13, 500 square feet, though covering a lesser area of 11,9000 square feet ensures more effective performance. The sprinkler arms adjust for varied spray patterns and arcs, throwing water from 15 to 56 feet. The sprinkler waters as it travels along a hose on a preset route, much like an electric model train, except with a hose as the rails. To water, the homeowner lays out the hose as desired, taking care to avoid dramatic corners or turnabouts that may result in hose kinks or a derailed sprinkler. A front wheel runs on the hose with the two traction-ready rear wheels bestride. The hose connects to the posterior of the sprinkler. For the best results, LR Nelson recommends a 5/8-inch hose, though a 1/2-inch hose may suffice, up to 200 feet in length. For sprinkling termination, the user places a shut-off ramp on the hose to lift the sprinkler off its "rails," while simultaneous stopping operation. The shut-off ramp should be installed with at least five feet of hose between it and the spigot. The traveling sprinkler operates at two motor speeds, high and low. On high power, the sprinkler travels approximately 37 feet per hour, with a 1/4-inch water application. On low power, the sprinkler moves at a 21 feet per hour rate with a 1/2-inch water application. When it reaches that limit, the wheels just dig into the dirt and the heavy sprinkler eventually shuts off it's water valve on the bottom. This sprinkler was the best solution for my need to frequently water a newly-seeded lawn. It waters a 50+ ft. The only limit is how much hose it can drag behind it. wide path where you lay out your hose.
This sprinkler works great. It does have a two speed gearbox, however high gear is still not very fast. The only thing I would change is the max speed. It has great coverage.
I recommend it to everyone, including friends and family. The Nelson Raintrain is by far the best sprinkler I've ever owned.
I have a big yard and this was a wonderful sprinkler to place in the yard and let it wander slowly across watering as it goes.
You won't regret it. I really don't get some of the reviews I've read recently. It's a lot cheaper than an in-ground sprinkler system, and just as effective. And the automatic stop-ramp works like a charm.
Look- this thing does EXACTLY what it says it does. Well, by design, it has to be. Don't hesitate to buy this product. Some say it's difficult to use. I'm thrilled with mine. If you have enough hose, you can wrap it around your lawn and water every inch of grass. Well, if you consider laying a hose across your yard difficult, then I guess it is.
This product is terrific. Some say it's heavy. You can control the speed. OK, it's a little more work, agreed, but it's worth it. You can adjust the spray pattern by adjusting the spray arms.
