Makita 5007MG 15 Amp 7-1/4-Inch Magnesium Circular Saw Reviews
ANYWAY, I bought this Makita 5007MG and LOVE the saw. The rubber grips everywhere are appreciated. I should send these comments to the company. As for the rip fence, it's pretty minimal.
The bevel lever and pre-set stops are great. The arm is so short that its max rip is a measly 7 or 8 inches. I like to have beater blades, new blades, masonry blades, finish blades all in the case. All in all this saw is a pleasure to use, particularly for me as a left-handervery easy to see the line-of-cut.
Also, the blade would deflect terribly when ripping along a bevel. The hook which allows the fence to slide in under the saw's sole plate should be bent slightly longer to allow you to shove it all the way over, tighten the nut, and rip an accurate 3 1/2"handy for plywood filler strips for 2x4 framing. Even the depth-of-cut guide is quite accurate. The led lights are a great bonus and are very effective even in total darkness.
I finally gave up and just started ripping everything free-hand. Buy the saw anyway. Where this package falls short is in the case, the rip guide, and the cord. The range in between is missing altogether. Also, the most you can rip to the right of the blade is 3", and the least you can rip to the left is 3 5/8".
Oddly, they are on whenever the saw is plugged in, though led's do have a very long life, so this may be of little concern. It is a rugged saw, to be sure, but I could never get it aligned properly, so ripping with the fence has always been an adventure. Even if the ground prong is a dummy prong, it sure helps any tool stay plugged into an extension cord.
It's a great one. Lastly, even though the saw is double-insulated and doesn't require a three-prong cord, it should have one. I'm not sure why the complaint from another lefty in another review.
As a precision-oriented professional home-remodeler, I finally got fed-up with the DeWalt 364 I had been using for the past 14 years. It's lighter, very well-balanced for me, and cuts incredibly accurately. The saw barely fits, and there's virtually no room for blade storage2 blades max.
Hopefully, Makita will figure this stuff out. The case is the same old generic case Makita has been using for all its sidewinders for years.
Saw is a good weight - not tiresomely heavy, not cheap-y light. I was impressed right out of the box. I'm pleased and would recommend this saw. This Makita replaced a 20 year old Craftsman circular saw that had developed a bent arbor. The depth and angle movements were smooth and easy to adjust. I thought the LED light at the cutline was a gimmick and wouldn't be worth much - but let me tell you, in the fading light of day when I was trying to get those last pieces of siding cut and installed, that light was a fantastic bit of engineering. The magnesium base slides very nicely on the building material.
The floor model was made in Japan so I bought it. Also this one was made in China. I checked this saw out at the local big box store and it seemed very well made. Other than that it seemed like a nice saw. I brought it back in favor of the Milwaukee. When I got it home I checked the alignment of the blade and it was out by about 3/32 front to back.
Another random note - If you order from amazon, you will have to have a person at home to sign for the delivery. If you are right handed, this is an excellent saw for the money and has held up well for both a school remodel and building a 4 story hotel so far. I am sure that somewhere out there Makita makes a left handed version, but in the meantime we're out shopping for a different saw. The problem for those of us who are lefties is that the blower blows the sawdust directly into your face, no getting around it. The saw works wonderfully, and cuts exactly what it is supposed to cut, I WOULD give this saw 5 stars, if either my husband or myself were right handed (not that I plan on using it much). My husband has been in construction for ages, he's a carpenter and we have recently started a construction company.
He needed a few new tools for the hotel he's currently building so this saw was one of a few purchases we made from Amazon. It wasn't a problem for us, but you should know since amazon doesn't have that listed anywhere. Just beware if you are left handed that you should try to either find a left handed model, or get a different saw. We've basically handed this saw off to our right handed saw guy to use.
Other than that, very good saw for the money. This is the second Makita circular saw I have purchased. The 1st one is still going strong after 12 years. Only issue I have is that all the circular saws I have used seem to blow the sawdust all over you and this one is no exception. This saw is lighter and easier to use than its predecessor with good power.
