Raytek MT6 MiniTemp Infrared Thermometer Reviews

The instruction manual (if you want to call it that) is nothing more than a sheet of paper with symbols in universal language (you know like a bucket of water with a circle and a diagonal line thru it, to represent "do not submerge in water") for proper/improper use. The only complaint I have so far is the belt case that was included with my unit is too small. It also came with a 9 volt battery for operation. After receiving it on Christmas morning and playing with it measuring everything from the heat coming from the gas log fireplace to the amount of cold air coming in from poorly insulated doors and windows, I can see this instrument will have an enormous variety of uses. I initally wanted one of these to use on my pizza stone to (1) determine the heat of the surface and (2) see how long it would take to regain the original heat after making multiple pizzas. I wanted one of these for a while so my wife encouraged me to get one for Christmas.

First of all it is a great deal from Amazon at the current price. A real instruction manual explaining spot beam/distance/accuracy relationship and things like that would have been nice but for what it does and what it costs I give if a 4.5 stars. You can try and stuff the unit in the case but I fooled with it for some time and never could get it in where I could zip the thing up all the way. Build quality appears to be pretty good, plastic case with rubber feel for good grip.

We do have about a months worth of cold weather in the winter, and in the summer time we get very cold winds when the fog comes in every afternoon. Homes are not air conditioned, and the heating systems are usually not that great. I can always feel the fog come in, because of cold drafts start blowing across my feet. I could feel the air coming through them, and insulated them to cut drafts. I was surprised to find out that the worst spot on all the windows, was where the ropes for the sash weights joined the lower sash. In my previous apartment, all of the outlets and wall switches let cold air in.

It starts around 4pm and warms back up around midnight. I bought this mainly for cooking, but finding drafts was enough to make this purchase totally worth it. It would register 61-65 degrees and then all of a sudden hit a 40 degree spot. I swept the laser beam around the sides of the sashes.

I also have 9 foot ceilings and a huge bay window that fills one whole wall of the main room. They were completely open and the cold air was pouring through them. We have a very temperate climate. My apartment is 80 years old and still has the original wooden double sash windows. I'd felt around the edges of the windows before but never noticed the area around the ropes.

My apartment started to warm up immediately. Be sure to check those also. I stuck a few cotton balls around the ropes, covered a couple of really bad spots on a door and suddenly - No Drafts. I knew I had drafts from the windows and doors but didn't really know where exactly.

I live in San Francisco. It can drop from 75 to 55 in 20 minutes. So I knew, that was a bad leak. If I didn't have steam heat, I'd probably save a bundle of money, just because of a few cotton balls.

It told me exactly where the worst spots were.

Amazon is sending me a replacement and I'm hoping it's better this time. You're not supposed to be that far away from the object anyway, even with the 10:1 ratio.

It was very close to the digital thermometers I have in my house (pointed directly at it). I'm not sure about the lower temperatures, but it seems pretty spot on at room temps (the accuracy is supposed to be within a degree).

I bought this product to measure any air leaks I have in my house. It works very well for that purpose.

But if not, I'll live with it.

The only reason for the 4 stars is that the laser sighting is skewed to the right.

Bought this IR thermometer to monitor chimney temps on the woodstove. Most important, it does what it's supposed to do with NO malfunction.so far, anyhow. So far, with a month of regular use, it has been bulletproof in operation, and there's a kizillion uses for it; cooking, checking the actual outdoor temp, etc.just pull the trigger and you have a reading.

Point it at a pot with boiling water and you will get readings of 85, 125, 90, 110, all within a few seconds. So forget about measuring the temperature of your pressure cooker, espresso machine, etc. The thermometer does not work on shiny surfaces as, for example, pots and baking trays and the manufacturer does not disclose that in the description. It is good for relatively matte surfaces. If you call the manufacturer, they will explain that the reason is that the emissivity of the surface is fixed at 0.95.
